Why see a herbalist?

While pulmonologists specialize in the lungs and may diagnose asthma, they often overlook other related conditions, such as eczema or food allergies, that a patient might also be experiencing. Consequently, we end up treating these disorders as separate issues, despite the fact that they can be expressions of the same underlying syndrome.
Not everyone with allergic diseases sees an allergist, which can lead to fragmented care. This highlights the necessity for a holistic approach, one that herbalists consistently adopt. By viewing each patient as a whole, we can better recognize the connections between various symptoms and conditions. Instead of merely addressing isolated issues, we aim to understand the interrelated nature of a person’s health, allowing for more comprehensive and effective treatment strategies, including immunomodulation with herbs.
Safety and Minimal Side Effects: Herbal medicine has been used for centuries, and most herbs (talking about whole herbs, not specific compound extracts) are naturally safe with minimal or no side effects, especially when compared to pharmaceuticals. Many pharmaceutical drugs were originally derived from plants, and whole herbs often provide more balanced effects due to their complex chemical makeup.
Personalized Care: Each treatment plan is tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual, taking into consideration their symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and overall health.

Short-Term Fix and Long-Term Fix

Today, the pharmaceutical market offers increasingly advanced solutions, such as biologic drugs (like dupilumab for atopic dermatitis). These drugs represent hope for many patients, but there’s a catch: their high cost. To access these treatments, you must fall into the “severe” patient category. This makes them inaccessible to many, creating a barrier that limits the use of innovative solutions to a small group of people. Additionally, biologic drugs don’t work for everyone.
Nowadays, we don’t have anything available that can cure allergies, and it takes a very long time from the discovery of a new pharmaceutical compound to its approval for use.
Meanwhile, most allergy or chronic inflammation patients are prescribed traditional medications like corticosteroids or beta-agonists (bronchodilators). While corticosteroids are effective in quickly reducing symptoms, we are all familiar with their long-term side effects. Cortisone doesn’t cure the underlying condition but merely suppresses the symptoms, trapping patients in a continuous cycle of dependency on the drug. Many patients develop a love-hate relationship with this treatment: on the one hand, it offers temporary relief, but on the other, it compromises overall health and quality of life with often debilitating side effects.
Herbs not only offer a more natural, enjoyable, and sustainable approach but also work on the body less aggressively. Instead of suppressing symptoms, many herbs, together with naturopathic practices, aim to rebalance the body, helping it heal from within. Additionally, herbal medicine is accessible and safe, free from the debilitating side effects that many conventional medications bring. Modern pharmaceuticals attempt to isolate and replicate the bioactive compounds within herbs. Yet plants possess therapeutic virtues far beyond just their chemical constituents.
The complexity of phytochemistry within each plant allows it to work in synergy. When multiple herbs are combined, for example, they can enhance each other’s medicinal potential. Plants are considered to have dynamic actions like warming, cooling, nourishing, stimulating, relaxing, etc. Traditional practices understand how to match these energies with the needs of the individual. This resonance between plant and person can facilitate deep healing on multiple levels.
